In 1999, he joined Media Ventures and collaborated with award-winning composer Hans Zimmer both as his Chief Technical Engineer and as a composer. Dooley applied his technical skills on films ranging from comedies such as Barry Levinson''s An Everlasting Piece and Penny Marshall''s Riding in Cars With Boys (starring Drew Barrymore) to blockbusters such as Ridley Scott''s Gladiator, John Woo''s Mission: Impossible 2, and Michael Bay''s Pearl Harbor.
Dooley''s music can also be heard on the small-screen as well. He has scored several TV documentaries for ESPN ("Citation", "Greatest Games", "Richard Flowers"), National Geographic ("Ascent", "Dean Kamen"), and The History Channel ("The Louisiana Purchase").
Dooley has also composed scores for several short films, including, Area 52 for the Sci-fi channel starring Fred Savage, Kevin Susman''s Papal Cab and the sundance filmfestival selection, Bit Players directed by Andy Berman, starring Verne Troyer and Phil Fondacaro. James also scored the award winning short film Untitled: 003 Embryo (produced by Santa Monica design firm, Belief, and directed by Mike Goedecke), and the award winning Western, Agua Dulce (executive produced by Mike Figgis).
James has also participated as an additional composer, arranger and orchestrator for Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt''s feature films. These include Simon Wells''s adaptation of The Time Machine as well as Ridley Scott''s Hannibal, Black Hawk Down, and Matchstick Men.
James also contributed as an additional composer for the DreamWorks animation feature Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002. To celebrate the release, the score was performed live to picture utilizing a large rock band ensemble with Hans Zimmer and Bryan Adams. James''s collaborations with Hans Zimmer have continued through such projects as the haunting score for Gore Verbinski''s The Ring, Antoine Fuqua''s emotional Tears of the Sun, and Jonathan Frakes'' adaptation of the beloved 60''s television series, Thunderbirds.
In addition to the blockbuster film scores, James has scored the cutting-edge short film Things Fall Apart for friend and director Yaniv Raz. James provided an eastern-influenced score for director Brian Knappenberger''s controversial documentary, Life After War, which aired as a special on the PBS news program "Frontline".
James''s music can be heard in the theatrical trailers for Elf, Tony Scott''s Man on Fire, and Antoine Fuqua''s King Arthur. Additional advertisement projects include an emotional spot for the United States Marines, as well a special promotional spot for Mercedes-Benz''s ultra-luxury sedan, the Maybach.
Dooley has also scored the widely acclaimed documentary, Rebels of Oakland, for HBO. This project was the highest rated sports documentary for HBO since the year 2000. In 2003, James had the unique opportunity to score the TV series "Skin", for Jerry Bruckheimer Television after finishing additional music composition on the Bruckheimer smash hit, Pirates of the Carribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
James recently teamed up again with Hans Zimmer to write music for Nancy Meyers'' Something''s Gotta Give, and Jerry Bruckheimer''s King Arthur.
The 2004 roster for James''s projects include a sequel to the smash hit video game from Namco, Dead to Rights 2! Dooley has signed on to score the TV movie The Hollywood Mom''s Mysteryfor Larry Levinson Productions in association with the Hallmark Channel. This is a repeat team up with Levinson Productions that produced Life on Liberty Street, also for the Hallmark Channel.
James is currently working with Hans Zimmer on the Dreamworks animation, Madagascar.
