THIS MUSICAL COMEDY WAS FIRST PERFORMED IN LOS ANGELES IN 1984 AS A SPOOF ON GEORGE ORWELL''S "1984." IT''S ORIGINAL TITLE WAS "1284," THE YEAR THE ACTUAL PIED PIPER APPEARED IN HAMELN AND TOOK AWAY 150 CHILDREN. IN THIS ZANY RE-TELLING, THE RATS WORK FOR THE ROTTEN MAYOR IN A CHEESE FOR GOLD EXTORTION GAME, AND THE PIPER IS A TIME TRAVELER.
MUSICAL DIRECTOR: ALAN AXELROD. VOCALISTS: HARVEY SHIELD, JOHN HOSTETTER, JODI MITCHEL, J.D. ELLIS, JOEY SHECK, SUSAN HOLMES, DEL APPLEBY AND LESLEY SACHS.
MUSICIANS: ALAN AXELROD, CARL SEALOVE, BOB FORTE AND SONYA EDELMAN.
THE ORIGINAL L.A. CAST WAS EIGHT. THE CIRCLE-IN-THE-SQUARE PRODUCTION IN NYC HAD A CAST OF TEN. SINCE THEN AS MANY AS SIXTY PERFORMERS HAVE TAKEN PART IN ITS PRESENTATION.
