In a time of artificial appearances and computer-generated performances, Chad Burdick is the real deal.
“One of my childhood mentors told me God had blessed me with a wonderful voice,” the performer proclaims. “He told me that whatever I did in life that singing needed to be a part of it.” Now, with that voice, combined with a humble yet un-relentless ambition, those words from childhood have given Chad a passion that shines through like a pure ray of sunlight to his audiences.
Chad Burdick was born on April 10, in Groton, Massachusetts. His childhood consisted of the normal activities such as school and household chores. More emphasized however for Chad was music. “My father used to play both the piano and the guitar at family gatherings and parties. I used to watch him with such awe and amazement and it was through him that I first realized my dream was to perform in front of people.”
Inspiration also came to Chad in the form of the King himself. “I would be all alone in my room listening to the old 8-tracks of Elvis Presley that my father had. I would sing and dance along to the songs and I would imagine a large audience in front of me on my wall.” I remember doing this for hours at a time. My friends would want to go out and get into trouble after school but I just loved to stay home and sing.
In his early teens Chad’s parents moved the family to Naples, Florida. His parents split up and his mother remarried soon after. Making sense of it all really was hard. “I was the kid that said my parents will never divorce”. While adjusting to his new home and step-father tragedy struck, Chad’s real father died of a heart attack. Although life was tough to understand, and he sometimes felt like he was in a tailspin, Chad never forgot about his love of music. He continued singing throughout his adolescence, and in high school, where he also pursued football, his other ambition. Chad’s dreams of performing were to be put on an irrevocable hold when he received a football scholarship to Sterling College in Kansas. He played four games there as a quarterback before receiving a devastating injury to his shoulder that ended his football career.
Returning home to Florida, Chad found himself with drive, but no direction. His stepfather, a naval officer, suggested the military. Before long, he was enlisted in the air force. There he spent years stationed in Phoenix, as well as Fairbanks Alaska.
“My service in the military really opened my eyes to the world and to myself. I really grew up a lot in that short time.” Phoenix in particular opened up Chad’s eyes to the live country music circuit. It was there Chad saw an environment full of raw energy that began to rekindle the flames of his desire to be on stage. Chad began to develop an affinity for country artists such as Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, and George Strait.
“There is something traditional and wholesome that I love about country music. I find that the [country] artists really focus on personal lyrics, strong values, and music that really connect with people’s lives.”
“Life and reality sometimes come along and make you forget about your dreams,” Burdick says. “Deep down inside though when I had stripped everything else away, the dream was still there.” The dream is now what gives him the ambition to pursue, he believes, his calling in life.
With his raw energy and a clear seamless voice that is genuine and heartfelt, Chad has truly come into his own on stage. Since then, Chad has received esteemed honors such as Best Country Act in the 2003 Worcester Magazine Sound Awards, as well as a nomination in 2003 for Best Country Act in the prestigious Boston Music Awards.
“The audience, whether there are five or five-thousand of them out there, have come to see me perform. So I try to take them to a happier place, make them forget about life’s day-to-day trials by doing what I love to do. I couldn’t have dreamt of anything better.” Chad also acknowledges the presence of another with him in every performance. “I know my dad is with me when I’m up on stage, I always picture God opening the floor of heaven to let my father see me. I sure hope he’s proud of me knowing that I am finally doing what I passionately love. To me, there can be no greater success.”
