Chris Emerson''s critically acclaimed self-titled debut release spun 3 TOP 40 singles on the Billboard AC Chart, putting him on stage in front of thousands of people with artists such as: Sugar Ray, Blues Traveler, Hootie And The Blowfish, Foreigner, and Grammy Award winner Shawn Colvin. Recently Chris was asked to open for the legendary late Ray Charles, but sadly never got the chance.
Chances are you have heard this talented singer/songwriters''s debut single, "All Because of You," the ballad that was a finalist in the John Lennon International Songwriting contest. It came in second place out of 40,000 entries. Three songs on this disc also won "Honorable Mention Awards in the anual "Billboard Songwritting Contest" !
"All Because Of You" then made it''s national splash on Columbia TRI-Star''s hit TV series Dawson''s Creek. This exposure sparked reaction at over 250 radio stations nationwide driving the single to #22 on the R&R AC Chart and #15 on the FMQB AC Chart. In 2002 Chris Emerson was #68 on R&R Magazine''s top 100 singles of the year chart!
Emerson''s voice is soulful and powerful and his new release is his best work yet! It''s country and has obvious cross over potential.
After spending six months visiting radio and a year touring behind his debut out on Monomoy/BMG, Emerson began work on "Shadow Of You" with producer Dave Matthews at Ocean Way Studios in Nashville.
"I wanted to make a country CD that reflected my style of singing and yet incorporated the elements of good country production." When asked why he decided to record a country record, Chris had this to say. " I''ve always liked country and now with artists like Tim McGraw and Rascal Flatts and keith Urban on the scene, crossing over didn''t seem that far fetched. Infact; people were saying my first record was a pop record with a country feel, so the new one is a country record with a pop feel, I guess?"
Emerson''s music from his first CD has been featured on Tia Airlines In Flight AC Channel, DMX, AEI, SIRIUS, MUSIC CHOICE, as well as KARAOKE. The new one will be as well.
He has also placed two songs on the soundtrack to Serial Intentions, a crime drama written and directed by Mark Grant. Look for Chris'' new music to be in Mark Grants'' new feature film, Circles, coming out on DVD soon!
BIO:
Chris Emerson is an artist very diverse in musical styling. His self titled debut CD contained three TOP 40 singles and was critically acclaimed. Billboards'' Chuck Taylor described him as "having an earthy confessional lyrical style equally accessible to coffeehouses and MTV," or CMT as the case may soon be.
Like many singers Emerson took an interest in music at the young age of five in Cambridge, MD learning how to tune his dads 12 string guitar and singing along to the diverse record collection his parents had. When his family moved to Boston he formed several high school bands and secured the lead in several high school musicals.
While attending Massachusetts College of Art, Chris met a producer and started working as a demo singer. He eventually began recording his own material. Emerson spent years recording by day and bartending at night. He was turned down by most every major label in LA and New York. "Looking back on my early recordings I can see why I didn''t get signed. The material just wasn''t there. Everyone liked my voice but there was something missing in the production. I was so broke I couldn''t even pay attention, let alone pay to go into the studio," reflects Emerson.
He was about to forget his dream of being a recording artist until as fate would have it one of his demos found it''s way to Indie Label Monomoy/Empire/BMG who signed him and quickly put him in the studio. The album took a year to complete. Emerson wrote ten of the thirteen songs.
Not long after, he was given a song by Diane Warren, the hit songstress who penned such hits as "I''ll Be" for Edwin McCain and "Don''t want To Miss A Thing" for Aerosmith. Emerson co-produced the album with Leo Mellace and Steven Catizone. It was mixed by John Luongo and Mix engineered by Peter Moshay (Brian Adams, Mariah Carey, and Hall and Oates.)
After the record was completed one of the tracks, "All Because Of You" won second place in The John Lennon International Songwriting Contest - no small feat - there were 40,000 entries worldwide. This exposure led to the song being discovered by the folks at WB Network, who put it on "Dawson''s Creek". "After my song was on DC I began getting e-mails from people all around the world," remembers Emerson. "It was great exposure." The song was the first single at radio; it went to # 22 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and #15 on the FMQB chart. "It''s pretty weird when you see you name next to some of your biggest influences on the Billboard chart," says Emerson. Subsequent singles, "Broken Heart" and "Baby''s Gone" went to # 28 and # 33 on Billboard and # 18 and # 24 on the FMQB chart respectively.
With three singles at radio his label put him on a 6 month radio promotional tour. He was doing morning shows at radio and local television to promote the record. "As soon as the radio tour ended we were out on a club and festival tour in a van. There were five of us, and everybody in my band at the time was from another country, so we had several different languages happening on the cell phones at once," laughs Emerson. "I met most of my band members at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Two of my band members live in Nashville so whenever we toured through it started to feel more and more like home to me, so when the tour was over I moved there."
Emerson has now recorded his second record in Nashville and is putting a new band together with guitarist, Jamie Laritz. His new record is a modern country record which he co-produced with Dave Matthews and Jamiue Laritz. "We used alot of the best session players in Nashville!" They are listed along with the lyrics in the CD artwork.
With some prior success at radio and a critically acclaimed debut release, Emerson sets forth with a new musical direction hoping to capture new fans.
