Biography
The Freys grew up deep in the mountains of northern California on an extraordinary family community. They are three of the eldest out of the 30 grandchildren of Paul and Beba Frey, who purchased 100 acres in the late ''50s to raise their 12 kids in the country. They soon planted grapes and in1980, Frey Vineyards became the first certified organic winery in the United States. Ten out of these 12 blue-eyed, blonde siblings live there to this day, helping in some way with the family business.
Much of the food is sustainably grown in between the vine rows and in surrounding orchards, gardens and pastures including: potatoes, vegetables, fruits and dairy. Any visitor to Frey Vineyards will see long rows of solar panels, flow form fountains, as well as tractors and vehicles that run on biodiesel. Blonde, barefoot people are a common sight at the ranch, where there is also a resident acupuncturist, who cultivates traditional Chinese herbs for his practice in one of the organic gardens. A further addition to the community is a master potter Doug Browe, living on the southern mountain side where he fires his anagama wood kilns to make large amphoras (from hand-gathered local clay) for vintage Frey wines. In this rural atmosphere, these boys grew up surrounded by forests, bird songs, rushing waterfalls, dozens of fellow cousins, and...music!
Dan, Sam and Adam Frey began playing music early on because almost every resident in their community is a musician. Bluegrass jams and sing-alongs are a common experience and every child is encouraged to persue any instrument of interest. Consequentially, the boys began performing as The Tomki Trio at local clubs in the town half an hour away. Their cousin, Johnny, occasionally added piano to their sound. Later they added trumpet and trombone and formed Sabrosa--which means "tasty" in spanish. It was during this period that they explored latin, klezmer and blues. Many recording sessions took place during this time, but it wasn''t until March of 2005, that they traveled to southern CA to record their first full album live in the studio. The CD was very well recieved (although it hasn''t yet been released to the public) so they decided to put two months into a real polished record. Since the release party on August 6th, 2005, the new album has been in rapidly increasing demand. Over the years, The Freys have studied and performed with many master musicians including: Jackson Browne, Mickey Hart, Buch Kwan, Chris Amberger and many others. They are deeply grateful for the inspiration and guidance that they recieved. Their mission as young citizens of the planet is to spread music with the intention to help people choose to live with joy, peace and creativity every day.
