Details:
“MY TURKEY WANTS HIS DRUMSTICK BACK! And, Other Children’s Songs” is a CD of original, catchy offbeat tunes and tales for children ages 2-7. All words, music and vocals are by Leslie E. Hendricks, and the CD includes 11 songs in various styles of musical arrangements that are upbeat and fun; both to listen, as well as dance along to; from Country to Calypso, Jazz to Irish jig… and more! The lyrics are pure and wholesome, witty and humorous, and the content of the songs are meant to encourage children’s self esteem, creativity, individuality and positive problem-solving skills. Adults also enjoy the music for its pure nostalgic quality. In fact, many of the songs are remnants of Leslie’s own childhood memories. For instance, “Rosa’s Pancake Hat” was based on a large pancake her father had made for her at breakfast when she was about 7 years old. “Dad had lots of batter left over and decided to make a huge pancake with it”. “To be funny, he put the pancake on my head. Needless to say, we both giggled. Though it was silly, it was a memorable moment”. And, never forgetting that experience, Leslie has turned memory into magical song! Originally recorded at RIMO SOUND in West Orange, NJ, musical arrangements are by composer/musician, Dave Rimelis.
By definition, Hendricks is a renaissance woman: a NY State licensed Massage Therapist by profession since 1988, she is also a recognized writer, artist and singer/songwriter/entertainer for children. Ms. Hendricks simultaneously grew up in Greenwich Village, NYC, Paris, France and rural New England before graduating from the University of Connecticut (Liberal Arts & Sciences) in 1973.
Since 1993 Leslie has enjoyed living and working in Montclair, NJ. And, in 1998 creating music for youngsters was truly a labor of love when she saw the birth of her first children’s music cassette (now in CD format) “My Turkey Wants His Drumstick Back! And Other Children’s Songs” after a “nine month creative gestation period”. Her friend, and piano technician “extraordinaire”, David R. Lutter, had given Leslie the basic premise for the main theme and title song, which is set to a lively country arrangement. If you think about it, we celebrate all other holidays in song, but have no major Thanksgiving Day songs on the market. “MY TURKEY WANTS HIS DRUMSTICK BACK!” (an obvious play on words) is a Thanksgiving Day song with a patriotic theme while saluting Tom Turkey as a hero. Though Leslie has composed all the songs on the CD, she gladly shares credit with David Lutter for the turkey melody because it was his brainchild.
Performance venues have included, major well known bookstores such as Barnes and Nobles Booksellers, BORDERS Books and Music, public libraries, fairs, Pre-K and elementary schools, “First Night” and church events, etc. In 2000, Leslie’s children’s song, “Slippery Ann” received “Honorable Mention” from the nationally recognized John Lennon Songwriting Contest.
